Dota 2 is a battle-arena style game or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). Two teams of five players are pitted against each other on a map. Each team has a base to defend, and the goal is to destroy the 'Ancient' in the other team's base. Each player controls an individual hero with their own unique power set. The players collect experience and items to boost their heroes; they gain the experience by defeating other player-controlled heroes. Dota 2 is available on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
While MOBA games do not rely heavily on background stories and lore, there is an interesting plot to set the mood in Dota 2. Much of the storyline was revealed in the first installment, but the general idea is that there is an endless war between the Radiant and Dire ancients. The story is actually highly detailed and nuanced, so we won't try to generalize it too much here. The main idea is that the heroes serve one ancient or another, and battle on their behalf. The lore is deliberately left somewhat open-ended so that players can use their own imaginations when playing, and the setting in particular is a little hazy. It's sometimes just referred to as an 'unspecified planet'. The heroes themselves actually have their own individual lore. A comic called 'Are we heroes yet?' sheds more light on the lore behind Dota 2.
Dota 2 was developed by Valve Corporation. Valve is one of the better known video game developers in the world. They've released several highly-successful games like Half-life, Team Fortress 2, and Portal 2. Founded in 1996, Valve Corporation is based in Bellevue, Washington.

News and Updates
Probably the biggest news for Dota fans at the time that this is being written is the cancellation of the 4th minor and major tournaments of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.
Even after seven strong years, Dota 2 is putting out regular updates. The most recent update, called 'The New Journey' introduced a new hero called the Monkey King, as well as a great deal of new in-game content.
Dota 2 is a time-tested favorite for fans of the MOBA genre. If you enjoy fast-paced, high-skill action games, try Dota 2.
