Back in 2013, Jagex (the creators of RuneScape) announced they had located an old version of 2007 RuneScape and that they could create a separate version of the current RuneScape. Since RuneScape had changed a lot since the old days, many players voted in favor of restoring RuneScape to it's former glory and so an Old School RuneScape server was setup for players.
Old School RuneScape includes the old simpler user interface and graphics first released in 2001. Since being released in 2013, the game still receives plenty of updates and has a small team dedicated to developing it. It makes a profit to the same way as before, by allowing users to buy membership access to use the full game.
As of 2016, OSRS has more concurrent players playing it than the original RuneScape. One of the reasons why the game is so successful, despite it usuing outdated graphics, is due to the OSRS community. Updates and new improvements have to be voted in by the community with at least 75% in favor of the additions. OSRC can also be played on mobile.
