Using unique graphics that are intentionally blocky and pixelated, Minecraft gives players a massive sandbox world that they can shape in any way they wish. There are a lot of sandbox style games out there, but very few, if any, offer the creative freedom to completely reshape the entire game-world according to your will like Minecraft. Players are free to build massive towers, dig endless mines, erect statues of all shapes and sizes, and nearly anything else they can imagine. Using various tools, players mine raw materials and use them to build to their heart’s content.

Put simply, the setting and story hardly even matter in Minecraft. While there is some backstory in the core game, and quite a bit more in spinoffs like Minecraft Story Mode, the main point of the game is about shaping the world to your liking. Players are not given any specific goals to accomplish, they are not pointed in any particular direction, and they are not required to do anything they do not want to do. Even "beating the game" by making your way to The End and defeating the Ender Dragon just gives the players rewards and leaves them to continue building in the sandbox world. The point of minecraft is the building and the mining, not the story.

From the first moment of the game, players are left standing at a random location on the map, and are expected to begin harvesting raw materials and using them to craft tools. As they gather more materials and craft better tools, they can move on to building structures, exploring, or fighting the various mobs that typically only come out at night. There are two main modes, survival and creative. In survival mode, players can take damage, and need to eat to avoid losing health and dying. They also must gather any materials they need to build or create anything. In creative mode, players have access to an infinite amount of all tools and materials in the game, and they are not able to take any damage for any reason; also they can fly.

Developer

Minecraft was developed by Mojang, and originally released in 2009 for Microsoft Windows, Mac, and Linux. Since then, it has been released on every major platform. Mojang is a Swedish video game developer based in Stockholm. Founded in 2009, Mojang has been highly successful, and no small part of that is owed to Minecraft.

Awards and Success

Minecraft is one of the most successful and popular games of all time. Minecraft has sold over 176 million copies of just the core game alone, to say nothing for the countless merchandise and spinoffs. The game has received so many awards that it would be impossible to list them all here. Here are just a few of the many awards that have been given to Minecraft.

  • Best Downloadable Game of 2010 by Good Game
  • Won Indie Game of the Year from Indie DB in 2010
  • Selected as one of 80 games to be displayed in the Smithsonian Art Museum
  • Won Best Independent Video Game at the Spike Video Game Awards in 2012
  • Won Best Downloadable Game at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2012

To this day, Minecraft is one of the most-played games in the world. The game receives regular updates and a great deal of attention from developers. Several new versions have been released in the last few years, including the Better-Together Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Java Edition. These changes have made the way for the cross-platform gameplay that players enjoy now, allowing Xbox, Playstation, Mobile, PC, and Nintendo Switch players to all play together on the same Servers. Mojang also released Minecraft Realms, which are small servers that players can pay a subscription fee for, and allow friends to join them in their own unique world.
