Best Phones For Pokemon Go

Pokemon fans were delighted when Pokemon Go was first released back in July 2016 and smashed records for the most played app on the App Store, generating over $160,000,000 in revenue from in-app purchases during it's first month live. Since then, the game has gone on to have a loyal fanbase, with constant updates to the game helping keep the game fresh and Pokemon Go fans satisfied. The game has released new generation of Pokemon, new legendaries and raids for players to take part in, all of which has increased activity in playing the game. One of the most popular features of Pokemon Go are Community Events, which allow players to come together to catch a specific Pokemon that has many bonuses that come with it (see the image above for Turtwig Community Day).

Pokemon Go continues to be developed despite the initial hype dying down after three years of being out. It is still one of the top played free apps on the App Store and it's popularity only increases the chances of more updates to the game. Game developer Niantic have added all sorts of new content to the game, including:

  • Research Quests- find legendary rare Pokemon by completing a series of quests
  • Raid Battles - grab a group of friends to take on the most powerful Pokemon in the game and have a chance at capturing them
  • Seasonal Pokemon - Pokemon with a seasonal theme are made available (such as the Christmas/Winter Pikachu)
  • Special Pokemon Go Events - they recently had Team Rocket attack Pokemon GO pokestops that trainers had to help protect
  • Improvements to core gameplay features - Egg Hatching, which used to require having your Phone open at all times, now allows you to acquire steps for your Eggs without the app or phone open.

Pokemon Go does include a micro-transaction store that you can use to purchase items that can help you in game. Items include things like Pokeballs, Lures, EXP Eggs and customisable clothes for your character. These are all purchased with Pokecoins, which you can either pay for or get yourself by holding down Gyms each day (A max limit of 200 coins per day). The game is free to play and you don't need to use the micro-transaction store to enjoy capturing Pokemon. When the game was first released, it was reported that Pokemon Go was earning $10,000,000 a day in revenue.

Getting the best Phone for playing Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is an app that can be downloaded for free from either the App Store on iPhone devices or from the Google Play store on Android Devices. The app has been known to drain your phone's battery life, due to how interactive the game is and the fact you need to have it open all the time to capture Pokemon, spin Pokestops and battle other Pokemon. This high usage of the game means your Phone's processor (CPU) is constantly being used, which in turn needs power from the Phone's battery, draining it's life over time. There are some important factors to consider when purchasing a phone for Pokemon Go:

  • Battery Life - what is the expected Battery Life of the phone
  • CPU - How good is the CPU
  • GPU - How good is the GPU
  • Storage - Whilst storage for Pokemon Go isn't needed (the app is only around 280MB) you'll want storage on your phone for other things
  • Operating System - do you want to use Apple's IOS system or do you prefer Google's Android OS? Both have different setups, different interfaces and feels to their systems.
  • Price - how much do you want to spend? Assuming you're not just buying a phone for Pokemon Go and are going to use it for other things, you need to set out your budget accordingly.

Probably the two main components from that list is CPU and Battery Life and they both work in tandem. The CPU is what is used to process Pokemon Go app and the CPU draws its power from the Battery. The harder the CPU has to work, the more power it's going to suck from the Battery (that's why older Phone's batteries tend to die a lot faster too). Over time, a battery's lifespan will also deplete, meaning when you first get your Phone the battery might last for 10 hours, but after a couple of years, that number could easily drop down to 7 or 8 hours. That is another reason why people upgrade their phones every year is to feel the freshness of a new battery. Of course, you can also just replace the battery in a phone, as Apple have indicated you can now go to their Apple Stores and request just that- you might find that your old iPhone starts to work a lot better.
